How to Capture Retina-Quality Screen Recordings
Record at native 2x resolution for razor-sharp product demos. Covers HiDPI capture, codec selection, bitrate settings, and downscaling strategies for delivery.
If you're recording on a Retina display but your output looks no better than a standard screen recording, you're likely capturing at 1x resolution without realizing it. Here's how to actually record at native Retina quality.
Understanding Retina recording
A 14" MacBook Pro has a display resolution of 3024×1964 pixels, but macOS shows it as an effective "1512×982" workspace. When you record the screen, most tools capture at the effective resolution (1x), not the native resolution (2x).
Recording at 2x means capturing all physical pixels — resulting in a video that's 3024×1964 (or whatever your native resolution is). Text is razor-sharp, icons have full detail, and you can crop or zoom in post without losing quality.
How to force 2x capture
macOS Screenshot tool (Cmd+Shift+5): Always records at native Retina resolution by default. The output file will be at full pixel count.
OBS Studio: Set Canvas Resolution to your native display resolution (e.g., 3024×1964), not the scaled resolution. Base Resolution and Output Resolution should both be set to native pixels.
ScreenFlow: Enable "Record Retina" in capture settings. The resulting clip will be at 2x.
QuickTime Player: File → New Screen Recording captures at native Retina resolution automatically.
Codec selection for high-res capture
At 2x resolution, you're pushing 4x the pixel count. Codec choice matters more:
- ProRes 422 LT: Best quality for editing. Expect 2-4 GB per minute at 3K resolution. Use if you have storage and plan to edit.
- H.265 (HEVC): Good balance of quality and size. 10-bit mode recommended for gradients. 200-400 MB per minute.
- H.264: Adequate if bitrate is high enough (30+ Mbps for 3K content). Most compatible for sharing.

Below these thresholds, text rendering loses its sharpness advantage over 1x capture — defeating the purpose.
Downscaling for delivery
Most viewers watch on 1080p screens. Delivering a 3024×1964 video wastes bandwidth. The strategy:
- Record at native 2x (maximum quality source)
- Edit at native resolution (allows cropping and zooming without quality loss)
- Export at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 for delivery
The downscaled output will be sharper than recording at 1080p directly, because downscaling from 2x applies supersampling — each output pixel is the average of 4 source pixels, producing cleaner anti-aliasing on text and icons.
When 2x recording isn't worth it
- Real-time streaming: Encoding 3K+ in real-time requires significant GPU. For live demos, record at 1x.
- Storage-constrained: 4x pixel count means 3-4x file sizes. One hour of ProRes at 3K is ~200 GB.
- Target is mobile only: If the video will only be viewed on phones (social media stories), 1080p capture is sufficient.
Multi-display Retina gotchas
If you have mixed displays (Retina laptop + non-Retina external monitor), recording the external will be at 1x regardless. Moving a window between displays during recording causes a resolution jump mid-video.
Solution: keep all demo content on your Retina display during recording. If you need more space, set the Retina display to a lower scaled resolution (more space) rather than moving to an external monitor.
