Should You Record Product Demos in 4K?
When 4K recording is worth the storage and processing cost for product videos, and when 1080p is the smarter choice.
4K sounds impressive on a spec sheet, but for product demo videos, it's often overkill that creates more problems than it solves. Here's when it's worth it and when it's not.
When 4K recording makes sense
1. You plan to crop or zoom in post. This is the strongest argument for 4K. Recording at 3840×2160 and delivering at 1920×1080 gives you 4x the pixels — meaning you can crop to 50% of the frame and still deliver full 1080p quality. This enables pan-and-zoom editing without quality loss.
2. You're targeting YouTube. YouTube allocates VP9 codec (better quality) to 1440p and 4K uploads, but only AVC/H.264 (lower quality) to 1080p uploads. A 4K upload at the same content gets significantly better compression quality from YouTube, even for viewers watching at 1080p.
3. Large-screen presentations. If your product video will be shown at conferences, trade shows, or on 4K TVs/monitors, native 4K captures every detail. Text at 14px renders cleanly at 4K but may show compression artifacts at 1080p on a large display.
When 4K isn't worth it
1. Social media delivery. Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram all recompress to well below 4K quality. Your 4K source provides negligible benefit when the platform delivers at 2-4 Mbps regardless.
2. Embedded on your website. Most website video embeds display at 600-900px wide. At that size, the difference between a 1080p and 4K source is invisible. Save the bandwidth — your page load speed matters more.
3. Quick internal demos. For async communication (Loom-style), 1080p is more than sufficient and uploads/processes 4x faster.
4. Limited storage/processing. 4K files are 3-4x larger, rendering takes 3-4x longer, and real-time encoding requires a powerful GPU. If your pipeline bottlenecks on any of these, 1080p removes the constraint.
The downscale advantage
Even when delivering at 1080p, recording at a higher resolution and downscaling produces a better result than recording at 1080p directly. This is because downscaling applies supersampling — each output pixel averages multiple input pixels, creating smoother anti-aliasing.
The practical benefit: text appears slightly sharper, single-pixel lines (borders, dividers) render more consistently, and subtle gradients show less banding.
But you don't need full 4K for this benefit. Recording at 2560×1440 and delivering at 1080p captures most of the supersampling advantage at 44% fewer pixels than 4K.
Storage reality check
Raw recording file sizes per minute (ProRes, highest quality):
- 1080p: ~3 GB/minute
- 1440p: ~5 GB/minute
- 4K: ~12 GB/minute
Compressed (H.264 high quality):
- 1080p: ~50 MB/minute
- 1440p: ~90 MB/minute
- 4K: ~200 MB/minute
A 30-minute recording session producing 5 minutes of final content generates ~60 GB of 4K ProRes source material. Plan storage accordingly.
The pragmatic recommendation
Record at 2560×1440 (if your display supports it). This gives you:
- Room to crop to 1080p without quality loss (1.78x, plenty for most reframing)
- Better YouTube quality allocation (same VP9 benefit as 4K)
- Supersampling benefits when downscaled to 1080p
- Half the file size and processing time of 4K
Only go 4K if you specifically need heavy cropping (showing small UI details at full-screen size) or large-format presentation delivery.
