Why Is My Screen Recording Blurry?
Diagnose and fix blurry screen recordings: resolution mismatch, compression artifacts, wrong export settings, and platform re-encoding issues.
Your screen looks perfectly crisp. You hit record. You watch the output. It's blurry. Text is soft, edges are smeared, and your product looks like it's rendered in 2005. Here's a systematic guide to finding and fixing the cause.
Cause #1: Resolution mismatch
The most common culprit. Your recording resolution doesn't match your display or your export doesn't match your recording.
Diagnosis: Right-click your recorded file → Get Info (macOS) or Properties (Windows). Check the pixel dimensions. If they're smaller than your display resolution, you're capturing at a lower resolution.
Fix: Ensure your recording tool captures at your display's native resolution. In OBS, verify that both Canvas Size and Output Resolution match. If using a Retina Mac, confirm you're recording at 2x (see your tool's HiDPI settings).
Cause #2: Low bitrate compression
Even at the right resolution, insufficient bitrate turns sharp text into mush. This is especially visible on:
- Small text (12-14px font sizes)
- High-contrast edges (dark text on white background)
- Thin UI elements (1px borders, icons)
Diagnosis: Pause the video and zoom in on text. If letters have visible blocky artifacts or "ringing" (light halos around dark edges), it's bitrate starvation.
Fix: Increase bitrate to at least 8 Mbps for 1080p screen content, 15 Mbps for 1440p, 25 Mbps for 4K. Or use CRF mode with a value of 18 or lower (lower = higher quality).
Cause #3: Scaling in your recording tool
Some tools (including Loom and older OBS versions) record at one resolution and scale to another during encoding. If you're recording a 2560×1440 display but the tool outputs 1920×1080, it's applying a non-integer downscale that softens everything.
Diagnosis: Check if your output resolution matches your input. In OBS, compare Base (Canvas) Resolution to Output (Scaled) Resolution.
Fix: Set output to match input. Scale in your video editor during export, not during recording. The editor's scaling algorithm (Lanczos) is superior to real-time recording scalers.
Cause #4: Platform re-encoding
You upload a crisp recording to YouTube, Twitter, or Slack — and it comes out blurry. Every platform re-encodes uploaded videos to their own specifications, and most optimize for file size over text clarity.
YouTube: Processes a 1080p upload at approximately 4-6 Mbps — far below what screen content needs. Fix: upload at 1440p or 4K even if your content is 1080p. YouTube allocates higher bitrates to higher-resolution uploads (VP9 codec, ~12 Mbps for 1440p).
Twitter/X: Aggressively compresses to approximately 2 Mbps. Fix: keep videos under 60 seconds and upload at the maximum resolution (1920×1200). Adding slight noise (1-2% grain) prevents the encoder from over-smoothing text.
Slack: Re-encodes to approximately 720p. Fix: share via a hosted link instead of direct upload.
Cause #5: Wrong color space or chroma subsampling
Most video uses 4:2:0 chroma subsampling — meaning color information is at half the resolution of brightness. For screen content with colored text and UI elements, this causes visible color fringing on edges.
Diagnosis: Zoom into colored text (like blue links). If the color bleeds or shifts at the edges, it's chroma subsampling.
Fix: Record in 4:4:4 chroma subsampling if your tool supports it (OBS: Settings → Advanced → Color Format: I444). For delivery, 4:2:0 is usually fine at high bitrate, but 4:4:4 recording preserves quality for editing.
Cause #6: Display scaling confusion
On Windows with display scaling (125%, 150%), applications render at the scaled resolution. If your recording tool captures at the physical pixel count but the app renders at the logical pixel count, you get interpolation blur.
Fix: Set display scaling to 100% before recording (if UI elements aren't too small), or ensure your recording tool is DPI-aware and captures at the actual rendered resolution.
The definitive test
Record 5 seconds of static text at your current settings. Open the file in a video player, pause it, and compare a screenshot of the video frame to a screenshot of the actual screen at 1:1 zoom. If the video frame is softer, work through the causes above in order until they match.
